“Life goes on and some things never change.”
As the notoriety of the village of Jackson increased, large hotels were built, many offering more than 100 rooms each. One of these large great hotels was the Eagle Mountain House, which was built originally in 1879 by Cyrus E. & Marcia Gale. The present Carter Notch Inn was built around 1890 near the large hotel and began its life as a two-room “annex” known as the Eaglet. It was used for overflow guests of the main Inn. As the Gale family grew, it was decided to enlarge the “Annex” for use as the family homestead. The two parlors were incorporated into one large living room with a beautiful fireplace and a kitchen and 5 bedrooms were added.
Over the years other changes were made and at one time it housed the serving staff of the Eagle Mountain House. After years of neglect, the “Annex” was completely renovated and opened for business again in 1994 as the Carter Notch Inn.
It is easy to understand why this Inn and its location is so popular. Step back into time with us and enjoy life as it is and was.
Passing the torch of ownership!
The Torch Is Lit
In 1994, the “annex” was purchased by Jim and Lynda Dunwell, experienced innkeepers, who proceeded to restore, rebuild, renovate and redecorate the property making it into the charming eight guest room bed-and-breakfast inn that it is still today with the name Carter Notch Inn. Based on their past experience from owning and operating other inns in the Mount Washington Valley, they quickly established a very successful hospitality business.
The Torch Relay Begins
In 2004 Jim and Lynda decided to retire and sold the inn to Richard Green and Sally Carter from the United Kingdom.
Richard and Sally had been to New England on several vacation trips and decided they would love to own and operate a small inn. Upon seeing the Carter Notch Inn, they fell in love with it and the Jackson area. Over the next ten years Richard and Sally built up the business to the point that the Carter Notch Inn became recognized by the reviewers of Trip Advisor as one of the top bed-and-breakfast inns in all New England. After their ten years, Richard and Sally decided it was time for them to take on the challenges and rewards of a larger facility.
The Torch is Passed and Moves Into it’s Third Decade
